Uncover the enduring charm of Saxifraga urbium, commonly known as London Pride, a robust and beautiful perennial offering year-round interest and delicate blooms for your garden.
This popular and reliable plant has a rich history, gracing British gardens for centuries. It is a natural hybrid, believed to be a cross between Saxifraga spathularis and Saxifraga umbrosa. These parent plants are native to the mountains of western Europe. Its scientific name, Saxifraga, comes from Latin ‘saxum’ (rock) and ‘frango’ (to break). This refers to its ability to thrive in rocky crevices. Additionally, the epithet ‘urbium’ means ‘of cities’. This hints at its resilience in urban settings and its strong association with London.
London Pride is a truly versatile and hardy perennial, admired for both its attractive evergreen foliage and its delicate floral display. The plant forms neat, compact rosettes of leathery, dark green leaves that remain vibrant throughout the year. These leaves often develop a reddish tint in cooler weather or when exposed to more sun, adding another layer of interest.
From late spring into mid-summer, typically from May through to July, Saxifraga urbium produces a delightful show of flowers. Tall, wiry, reddish stems emerge, reaching above the foliage. Each stem carries numerous small, star-shaped flowers. These blooms are predominantly white or pale pink, beautifully adorned with tiny, contrasting crimson spots that create a charming speckled effect.
Gardeners often use this charming plant in a variety of ways. It performs excellently as a groundcover, forming a lush carpet that suppresses weeds. This is especially true in shady borders or under trees. Furthermore, its ability to tolerate dry shade makes it invaluable for difficult planting spots. You can also plant London Pride to edge paths or incorporate it into cottage garden schemes. It is also an ideal choice for rockeries, providing a soft contrast to hard landscaping.
This plant typically requires little to no specific pruning; simply deadhead spent flower stems to maintain tidiness. This also encourages the plant’s energy into foliage growth. It is an excellent choice for supporting local wildlife as its flowers provide a nectar source for bees and other small pollinators.
Hardy in all of the UK and northern Europe. Suitable for exposed sites.
Saxifraga urbium is generally low maintenance. Water regularly during prolonged dry spells, especially in its first year. Deadhead spent flower stems to keep the plant tidy and encourage vigorous foliage growth. Divide congested clumps every few years in spring or early autumn to maintain vigour and spread the plant.
