Discover Actinidia arguta ‘Jumbo’, a vigorous deciduous climber producing delicious, smooth-skinned kiwi berries, ideal for UK gardens.
This superb female cultivar of Hardy Kiwi offers a delightful twist on traditional kiwi fruit. It grows vigorously, cloaking pergolas or walls with lush foliage before revealing sweet, bite-sized fruits. Actinidia arguta ‘Jumbo’ thrives in the British climate, offering ornamental appeal and a bountiful harvest.
Actinidia arguta ‘Jumbo’, from East Asia’s Actinidia genus, provides large, oblong, green fruits. These ‘Jumbo’ kiwi berries are uniquely smooth-skinned, enjoyable straight from the vine. They offer a sweet, refreshing tang, much like a traditional kiwi without fuzz.
This robust, woody-stemmed climber reaches significant heights and spreads. Its ovate leaves, with serrated edges, create a dense, bright green canopy throughout spring and summer.
In early summer, Actinidia arguta ‘Jumbo’ produces small, creamy-white flowers. These blooms are inconspicuous yet emit a subtle fragrance. Crucially, they attract bees and other pollinators. For fruit production, a male Actinidia arguta like ‘Weiki’ must be nearby for pollination.
The foliage stays vibrant green for much of the season. It then gradually turns yellow in autumn before dropping. This offers seasonal interest prior to winter dormancy.
This vigorous climber excels when trained over strong structures. Use it along pergolas, arbours, or sturdy fences. It creates a living screen or canopy, offering shade and privacy. Consequently, it is a superb choice for kitchen gardens or ornamental fruit areas. Its robust nature covers large areas quickly, transforming walls into productive features.
Pruning is essential for managing the vigour of Actinidia arguta ‘Jumbo’ and encouraging fruit production. Prune in winter when dormant, removing dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Summer pruning reduces new growth, maintaining shape and exposing fruits to sunlight, aiding ripening.
The small, subtly fragrant flowers attract various pollinators. Bees visit the blooms, diligently collecting nectar and pollen. Planting Actinidia arguta ‘Jumbo’ actively supports local bee populations, enhancing biodiversity with delicious fruit.
Hardy in all of the UK and northern Europe. Suitable for exposed sites.
Provide a strong trellis, pergola, or wires for this plant's vigorous climbing habit. Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during dry spells and fruit development. Apply a balanced granular fertiliser in spring. Prune in winter (when dormant) to remove old wood and shape. Summer prune to control vigour and expose fruit to sunlight, aiding ripening. Ensure a male Actinidia arguta cultivar is planted nearby for fruit set.
This plant is deciduous so it will lose all of its leaves in the autumn and get fresh new foliage each spring.
