Clematis ‘Jackmanii’ is a truly iconic climbing plant, celebrated for its robust nature and profusion of rich, velvety purple blooms. This classic cultivar adds drama and elegance to any garden.
Since its introduction in 1862 by George Jackman & Son of Woking, Surrey, Clematis ‘Jackmanii’ has become a beloved fixture in British gardens. This pioneering hybrid, resulting from a cross between Clematis lanuginosa and Clematis viticella, revolutionised clematis breeding with its large, vibrant flowers. It quickly established itself as a must-have plant, still cherished today for its reliable performance and stunning display. This vigorous climber effortlessly transforms vertical spaces, bringing spectacular colour and life to your outdoor areas.
The name ‘Jackmanii’ honours the nursery responsible for its creation, a testament to its horticultural significance. This particular clematis variety quickly gained fame for its novel characteristics. It brought the larger flower size of its parent, Clematis lanuginosa, together with the hardiness and floriferous nature of Clematis viticella. Gardeners across the UK quickly embraced this new, easy-to-grow large-flowered clematis, solidifying its place in gardening history.
Clematis ‘Jackmanii’ truly shines from July through to September, sometimes even into October. During this period, it covers itself in glorious, deep violet-purple blooms, each featuring four broad, overlapping sepals. These impressive flowers measure around 10-15 cm across. Their rich colour creates a striking visual impact against the plant’s dark green foliage. Furthermore, the sheer volume of flowers ensures a continuous and dazzling show throughout the warmer months, making it a garden highlight.
The plant grows with a robust, twining habit, sending out shoots that effortlessly cling to supports. Its dark green leaves provide a perfect backdrop for the vivid flowers. As a deciduous plant, its foliage offers seasonal interest before falling in late autumn. However, its woody stems provide structural interest during winter. This clematis reaches an impressive height, easily growing up to 4 metres, and spreading widely.
Clematis ‘Jackmanii’ offers immense versatility in garden design. Use it to soften brick walls, cover fences, or drape over arbours, creating inviting shady spots. It thrives when given a sturdy structure to climb upon. You can also allow it to scramble through larger shrubs or deciduous trees, adding a stunning splash of late summer colour. This adaptability means it fits well into various garden styles, from formal to cottage.
Beyond its beauty, Clematis ‘Jackmanii’ plays a valuable role in supporting garden wildlife. Its abundant open flowers attract bees and butterflies, which feed on its nectar and pollen. These essential pollinators help to maintain local ecosystems. Thus, by planting ‘Jackmanii’, you not only enhance your garden’s aesthetic appeal but also contribute to biodiversity. It becomes a small haven for beneficial insects.
Very hardy. Tolerates temperatures typical of a continental winter.
Provide a sturdy support structure for its climbing stems. Water regularly during dry periods, especially in its first year. Mulch around the base to keep roots cool and moist. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser. Prune hard in late winter or early spring, cutting back all stems to a strong pair of buds about 30-45cm from the ground.
This plant is deciduous so it will lose all of its leaves in the autumn and get fresh new foliage each spring.
