Ornithogalum nutans, often known as Drooping Star of Bethlehem or Sleeping Star of Bethlehem, is a truly enchanting spring bulb. Its common name, “Star of Bethlehem,” originates from the star-like shape of its open flowers. The “nutans” epithet, derived from Latin, aptly describes the plant’s characteristic drooping flower buds before they unfurl. This species belongs to the Asparagaceae family, specifically the subfamily Scilloideae, highlighting its close relation to other popular spring-flowering bulbs.
Gardeners greatly appreciate the unique floral display of Ornithogalum nutans. Its flowers emerge on graceful stems, initially nodding downwards, which gives rise to its evocative common name. As the blooms mature, they open to reveal pristine white, star-shaped interiors. The outer petals beautifully showcase striking pale green stripes, offering a subtle contrast. These elegant flowers typically appear from April through to May, adding freshness to the garden as other spring bulbs begin to fade. Before the flowers, the plant produces slender, strap-like leaves. These grass-like leaves feature a delicate white central stripe, providing visual interest even before the floral spectacle begins.
Ornithogalum nutans proves remarkably versatile in the garden. It is an excellent choice for naturalising in grass, where its charming blooms create a breathtaking meadow-like effect. Consider planting it in informal borders, allowing its delicate beauty to soften edges and complement other early spring perennials. This plant also thrives when nestled beneath deciduous trees and shrubs, benefiting from the dappled shade. Furthermore, its modest height makes it suitable for rock gardens or along pathways. The graceful, drooping habit of its buds offers a unique aesthetic. It generally does not require pruning or shaping, maintaining its elegant form naturally. Ornithogalum nutans offers nectar and pollen for early foraging bees, thus contributing to a biodiverse garden ecosystem.
Hardy in all of the UK and northern Europe. Suitable for exposed sites.
Ornithogalum nutans is a relatively low-maintenance bulb once established. Plant bulbs in autumn, around 10-15cm deep and 10cm apart, in well-drained soil. They prefer a position in full sun to partial shade. Water moderately during dry spells in spring when in active growth. After flowering, allow the foliage to die back naturally; do not cut it prematurely, as this allows the bulb to store energy for the following year's bloom. These bulbs naturalise readily, forming larger clumps over time. They generally do not require regular feeding if planted in fertile soil, but an annual top-dressing of compost in autumn can be beneficial.
