This exceptional shrub, a cultivar of Hypericum inodorum, offers year-round appeal. It transforms from bright yellow summer blooms to a spectacular display of colourful berries. These berries, often appearing in shades of red, pink, orange, or green, create a truly eye-catching spectacle. It is a robust and easy-to-grow plant, perfect for adding structure and charm to various garden settings across the UK. Its adaptability makes it a gardener’s favourite, ensuring a beautiful display each season.
Hypericum inod. Miracle Marvel is a special cultivar of Tutsan, Hypericum inodorum, which is also commonly known as St John’s Wort. Its botanical name, ‘inodorum’, means ‘odourless’, differentiating it from other fragrant species. However, its cultivar name, “Miracle Marvel,” perfectly describes its incredible visual transformation. This plant quickly forms a compact, bushy shrub. It adds consistent beauty to any landscape design.
From July through September, Hypericum inod. Miracle Marvel showcases cheerful, cup-shaped yellow flowers. These bright blooms provide nectar for many visiting bees and other pollinators. As summer ends, these flowers give way to the plant’s most admired feature: clusters of large, glossy berries. The berries mature into an amazing range of colours, from vibrant reds and deep burgundies to soft pinks and even lime green, often on the same plant. The foliage is typically dark green, ovate, and provides a dense backdrop. Furthermore, it may show some autumn colour before falling in colder areas, or remain semi-evergreen in milder spots. Later, the colourful berries offer a food source for garden birds during autumn and winter. This makes the plant a beneficial addition to any wildlife-friendly garden.
This compact shrub is ideal for mixed borders, adding height and significant interest. You can plant it as a low informal hedge or use it as a striking specimen in a large container on your patio. Its adaptability means it thrives in many UK garden designs. Consequently, it fits well in cottage gardens, modern urban spaces, or woodland edges. Many gardeners also grow Hypericum inod. Miracle Marvel specifically for its cut stems and berries. These are highly prized by florists for their unique texture and lasting colour in arrangements. Prune this plant in late winter or early spring. Cut back about one-third of the old stems to encourage fresh, vigorous growth. This practice also promotes a better display of flowers and berries later in the year.
Very hardy. Tolerates temperatures typical of a continental winter.
Plant Hypericum inod. Miracle Marvel in well-drained soil in a sunny or partially shaded spot. Water regularly until the plant establishes a strong root system. Once established, it tolerates drier conditions. Prune in late winter or early spring, removing about one-third of the older stems to encourage vigorous new growth and a better display of flowers and berries. Remove any dead or damaged wood at the same time. Generally, this plant does not require regular feeding, but a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring can support robust growth, particularly in poorer soils.
This plant is deciduous so it will lose all of its leaves in the autumn and get fresh new foliage each spring.
