Known commonly as Twisted Hazel or Common Hazel, Corylus avellana Medusa is a truly exceptional plant. Its unique growth habit creates a living sculpture, particularly prominent during the winter months when the branches are bare. This specific cultivar stands apart from its wild hazel relatives, offering an ornamental twist that truly lives up to its mythological name.
The name ‘Medusa’ for this delightful hazel cultivar perfectly captures its unique appearance. It alludes to the ancient Greek myth of Medusa, whose hair comprised living, writhing snakes. Similarly, the branches of Corylus avellana Medusa twist and turn in a serpentine manner. These fascinating branches are a highlight, especially when adorned with delicate yellow-green catkins from January to March. Consequently, they offer an early sign of spring and much-needed pollen for emerging bees.
As spring progresses, the plant develops soft, heart-shaped green leaves. These provide a lush, textural backdrop through the summer season. In autumn, the foliage transforms, often taking on lovely yellow hues before falling. This reveals the plant’s stunning skeletal structure once more. Although primarily grown for its ornamental stems, this hazel can produce small, edible nuts. These add to its appeal for garden wildlife, like squirrels and various bird species.
Cultivating Corylus avellana Medusa brings a dynamic element to the garden. It thrives in various well-drained soil types, including sandy, loamy, and chalky conditions. Furthermore, it adapts well to both full sun and partial shade. Its moderate growth rate means it typically reaches a manageable height and spread of 2-3 metres. This makes it suitable for many garden sizes. You can occasionally prune it to maintain its shape or remove any unruly branches. This should be done in late winter when the plant is dormant. However, generally, minimal pruning is needed to enjoy its natural, artistic form.
Very hardy. Tolerates temperatures typical of a continental winter.
Corylus avellana Medusa is generally low maintenance. Water regularly during dry spells, especially in its first year, to establish a strong root system. Minimal pruning is needed; remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter when the plant is dormant. You can also lightly prune to maintain its desired shape or size. Avoid heavy pruning unless coppicing to encourage fresh, strongly twisted growth, which is typically done every few years. Feed with a balanced general-purpose fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth. Monitor for common hazel pests like aphids or diseases, though it is generally robust.
This plant is deciduous so it will lose all of its leaves in the autumn and get fresh new foliage each spring.
